Privacy Policy — Word Counter, Side Panel

Chrome Extension · Last updated June 2026

    Summary

Word Counter — Side Panel does not collect, transmit, store on remote servers, or sell any personal or sensitive user data. All text analysis happens locally in your browser. This policy explains exactly what the extension does and the limited data it handles locally.

    1. What the Extension Does

The extension counts words, characters, sentences, and related statistics for text on the page you are viewing or text you select, and displays the results in the browser side panel. All counting is performed locally on your device.

    2. Information We Collect

We do not collect any personally identifiable information. The only data the extension handles is:

    • Page or selected text — read in-memory only, solely to compute counts. It is processed locally and is never transmitted to us or to any third party.
    • Your settings (such as display preferences) — saved using Chrome's storage API and kept on your device / in your own Chrome sync account.

We do not collect browsing history, IP addresses, location, health, financial, or authentication information, and we do not retain the text you analyze.

    3. How the Data Is Used

Text is used only to calculate and display counts in the side panel, in real time. Your saved settings are used only to remember your preferences between sessions. The data is not used for any other purpose.

    4. Data Sharing & Selling

We do not share, sell, rent, or transfer any user data to third parties. We do not use your data for advertising, credit assessment, or any purpose unrelated to the extension's single function.

    5. Permissions We Request

    • sidePanel — to show the word counter in the browser side panel.
    • activeTab / scripting — to read text from the page you are currently viewing so it can be counted.
    • contextMenus — to add a right-click option for counting selected text.
    • storage — to save your display preferences locally.
    • Host access (all sites) — required because word counting can be requested on any page you choose. The extension only reads text to count it and never sends page content anywhere.

    6. Data Retention & Removal

Analyzed text is never stored — it exists only in memory while a count is displayed. Settings stored locally by Chrome are removed when you uninstall the extension or clear your browser data. We hold no copy of your data.
